In the Swim of Things

Meet entrepreneur, model and swimwear designer Lucy Miller

Australian Lucy Miller launched her modeling career in Canada, a step that took her to gorgeous locations around the world and inspired her to start designing. Today, she’s making the transition from solely modeling to working on her start-up company, a swimwear line. Here, Wengage chats with her to learn more about her business and her approach to life.

What’s your favourite travel destination?

Bali has its own beautiful, positive energy that is palpable. Wonderful things always happen in Bali. The locals are so lovely and kind and I always meet new people from around the world who become good friends and contacts. I love that they have so many options for well-being and healthful, mindful activities. It’s also the most vegan-friendly place I’ve been, which makes eating well very easy for me! And, I just love Canada. I lived in Vancouver for a few years and have such fond memories. The landscape is so stunning there and I felt so close to nature.

How do you feel about solo travel?

Because my business is a one-woman-show at this stage, most of my travels are alone and I’m quite used to it. I always make sure to be out and about and make friends and be around people, that way I don’t really get lonely. If I’m feeling a bit shy or run down, I do wish for it to be easier to make friends while travelling.

What inspires you to do great work?

I love seeing people happy. I love when someone puts on my swimwear and says “I feel so sexy and confident,” and I love creating something that someone loves to wear and make her own memories in. And I’m a very stubborn person too, so being told I can’t do something really pushes me to do it even better.

Wengage is about great company and good conversation. What role do those two elements play in your life? What makes for great conversation?

To me, great conversation is open and honest. It involves giving and taking and being interested in every party’s story and not bragging or being an attention hog. I love speaking to people and I’ve always been super-interested in how people tick and meeting people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. I find it so interesting how different we all are, and how similar we can be.

Do you have a mantra or quote that speaks to you?

I have so many and sometimes get such a boost from reading my favourite ones saved in my phone. I have the word “Believe” tattooed on my finger and I truly believe that you can create your own reality and that you if you believe in it, you can have it.
